Tips to Lose Weight the Healthy Way

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

This is a guest article by Lisa Roberts. Lisa is the co-writer of a popular weight loss site that will teach you how to lose weight and keep it off!

Portion Control – Just like everything in life, too much of anything is a bad thing. This is why it is essential to allow yourself a little room to include some of your favorite foods. Cutting out all of your favorite foods will not only decrease your chances of staying on a diet, but it also increases your chances of binging. It is beneficial for you to eat foods you love and still lose weight. You can have a little treat here and there, but learn to eat a lower fat version of it. For instance, if you love cheese, buy a lower 2% fat cheese spread, as opposed to the higher fat version.

Take Notes – Watching what you eat is important, but writing it down is equally important. This is because even though you may keep an eye on what you eat, there is still a tendency that you may not keep an accurate count of fat grams or calories. When you write it down it puts your diet in perspective and allows you calculate your calories and fat a lot more consistently.

Stick a Wedding Invitation or Favorite Place to Visit on the Fridge – This is the same concept as having a not so favorable picture of yourself on the refrigerator. You know the one that shows your bad side. This is a reminder to keep yourself motivated whenever you feel like making a mad dash for the fridge. (more…)

Running and Weight Loss

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

running and weight lossRunning is one of the most effective ways to burn calories and lose weight. You lose approximately 100 calories for every mile that you run. Before you set out to run, you should set a goal in your running weight loss plan for example how much weight you want to lose, how long each running session will be, and the distance you run. The further the distance you run and the longer time you spend running, the more weight you will lose.

Next, you should create a running plan based on your goals including the route, and the distance of the route. If you plan to run five times a week, your running route should be five miles. (more…)

Does Exercise Help Prevent Colon Cancer?

Does Exercise Help Prevent Colon CancerExercise and a healthy way of life go a long way in the prevention of colon cancer. Exercise stimulates your body functions and helps the body get rid of toxins and chemicals that might produce polyps and colon cancer. It is harder for polyps to develop in a body that functions properly than in one that remains inactive most of the time.

Exercise stimulates bowl movements and digestion. Any person who is used to eating all kinds of saturated fats and tons of carbohydrates, leaving them inside their bodies for it to process them whenever possible is in danger of colon cancer. Polyps develop under unsanitary conditions and when the muscles around the colon are weak or overexerted. When a person is not regular or suffers a lot from constipation, the passing of hard feces may tear the colon’s mucous tissue and allow infection to settle opening the possibility of polyps developing. Friday, February 26th, 2010

workoutWhen icky weather stands between you and your workout, there is no need to slack on the exercise regimen–you can still be a fitness goddess in your house. Ditch the couch, TV and chips for a bit and sweat it out with one, or all four, of these way basic moves, each guaranteed to burn up major calories and any lingering symptoms of cabin fever.

-          Jumping rope. If you don’t have the rope, just mimic the moves.
-          Shuffles. This move not only burns calories, it also tones your entire body. First, bend your knees until you’re in a near-sitting position, making sure your knees aren’t extending past your toes. Stick your arms out in front of you and start shuffling from one side of the room to the other.
-          Sprints. Sprint from one end of the room to the other, touching the floor at each end.
-          Stair climbing. Run up and down a flight or two. Try alternating between running up every step as possible on the way down, but step carefully so you don’t fall.
-          Frog jumps. Squat, spring up and land. Skip this one if you’ve got a bum knee. (more…)

Choosing the Right Yoga Mat

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Choosing the Right Yoga MatIt doesn’t matter if you haven’t tried yoga yet or you’ve been into it for a number of years, you will either need a mat now, or you’ll have to get new one in the near future. You might have started off with those really colorful but inexpensive mats, but found out they smelled strongly of chemicals? Or you tried the more earth-friendly yoga mat created from jute. It smelled alright, but then it didn’t last for more than a couple of months, right? What does a Yogi do in such a situation? How do you actually choose a good mat?

Regular Plastic Yoga Mats

This is a mistake made by many first timers. It really is inexpensive, which is why many newbies go for it. But let me tell you, it’s a big mistake if you’re looking for Yoga to be a long term thing. First and foremost, it’s really very thin. Apart from that doesn’t it doesn’t give a lot of good cushioning. Also, it smells of strong chemicals, and these are definitely not good for your health! Such types of mats are produced using Phthalates, which is a chemical that turns any hard plastic into soft plastic causing kidney and lung damage in rats. Never leave this form of Yoga mat in the car, ever. As it releases a harmful chemical it’s left in a hot environment. And if you’re big on the environment and surroundings, these are definitely not for you. This is because they are made using environmentally dangerous procedures. (more…)
